Disappearing Streets – Pt. II
147 words eaten alive on July 27, 2007 - Filed Under Forest Street, This Town -
Yesterday I wrote about the endangered Victorian Streetscape here in Yarmouth, and today I’ll be talking briefly about the nearby streets that have already converted to curb & guttering. Most of the original trees on these other streets are already gone and the ones that remain are dying, as can be seen in the pictures Rod has taken.
I’m not an historian or a botanist, but it’s pretty apparent that these trees aren’t as healthy as those on Forest Street, and the primary difference is that Forest still has the old ditch & culvert drainage system, not the curb & gutters as found on other streets.
Now I’m not saying that curbs are killing the trees, I don’t have all the facts. I do not have pictures of these trees from just before the curbs were installed, so it’s possible the tops were dying even before then.
