Disappearing streets

203 words eaten alive on July 26, 2007 - Filed Under Forest Street, This Town -

1forest.jpgEven though I use or cross this street almost every day, I never realized how rare a street it is in this day and age. It’s recently been brought to my attention that old Victorian Streetscapes like this are an endangered species. After comparing photos taken over 100 years ago it’s surprising how little has changed in this part of Yarmouth, and yet just 1 block over everything looks so different.

two.jpgRod Hemeon, a resident of Forest Street, is fighting to have this street protected as a Heritage property. Not just the properties owned by the residents, but also the sides of the street that are owned by the town. He doesn’t want to see the old culvert & gutter system replaced by underground pipes and cement curbing as it would drastically alter it’s look and beauty. For whatever reasons however, the town council and various committees are fighting him every step of the way.

You can see all of Rod’s work at Yarmouth Streetscape and I’ll add links to more info as it becomes available. He’s done a great job with the new pictures, taking them from the same place and angle as those from 100 years ago.
