Linkbidr flopped?

290 words eaten alive on July 1, 2007 - Filed Under Business -

Well it looks like Linkbidr isn’t doing so well. At first it seemed like a promising idea. Every day there are 10 links on display on the main page. Advertisers bid on whichever spot they’d like their ad to show up on and if they win, they get listed for a full 24 hours. The first day it launched I checked it out and there was quite a bit of activity. The top spot sold for around $11.50.

I then forgot about it for a few days and checked again on Friday. It was nearly dead, the top 3 spots were selling for under $1 each and some of the lower slots weren’t selling at all. So I put in a bid for slot #3 and won it for 9 cents. Yup. Figured why not eh?

The 24 hours is up and for my 9 cents I got a little over 100 page impressions and 6 unique clicks. Most of those impressions are probably just advertisers checking it out. I probably account for at least 6 of those impressions myself just from logging in to see how it’s going. Either way though, at an average of 1.5 cents a click it’s rather cheap.

Which brings us to the problem of linkbidr, I don’t think the whole theory was well thought out from the beginning. The concept is great for advertisers, but the problem is this: what is there to attract the average Joe who’s out browsing the internet? If Joe has no incentive to visit linkbidr on a regular basis, then the advertisers will get nothing for their money aside from the occasional click from other advertisers.
