Old computers & RAM

Any computer can benefit from having more RAM, with a couple of exceptions of course.  Old computer with windows 98?  Don’t bother putting more than 512mb in it, it’ll cause problems.  The other problem arises with old computers from the Pentium II, III and early Celeron era.  Most of those need PC100 RAM.  PC133 looks the same, but what happens with most older system when you pop in a PC133 is that they only read half the stick.  128mb only reads as 64mb and so on.  While PC133 is still readily available and is somewhat reasonable price-wise, the older PC100 is pretty hard to come by and is usually around twice the price.  Several times a week I get asked about RAM for older computers and I always have to tell the people, bring your computer in so I can try what I have in stock.  If it works, great, if it doesn’t then at least you didn’t waste your money.
