Used Computers

I usually get a couple calls a week from people who want to sell me a used computer. And hardly any of them have a clue as to what the computer is. When I ask what it is I tend to get answers of ‘it’s a dell’ or ‘it’s a compaq’ or even ‘it’s a really good computer, it’s black and goes really fast’. Errr yeah, so next I ask how old is it, and too often the answer I get is ‘oh we’ve had it for 5 or 6 years’. So most of them I turn down just based on the age. If it’s too old then it’s worth so little and will take forever to re-sell.
The last one I bought wasn’t too bad, a Celeron 2.5ghz, but only 128mb ram. Really slow with Windows XP but at least it’s DDR so it can be upgraded easily and fairly cheaply. Paid $100, spent a few hours cleaning it up and wiping the drive and sold it a week or so later for $200. Deals like that are what pays the rent, eventually. Too bad most people have junk and want a fortune for it.
