A little more downtown ranting

Since I mentioned the new School Board building earlier, I remembered something else I wanted to bitch about regarding it.  A year or so ago, just before they finished up the building, I had a visit from someone on one of the downtown committees, most likely associated with the YDC (Yarmouth Development Corporation).  They were going around to the businesses downtown asking if we would like to donate something to put in a gift basket.  50 gift baskets actually.  1 for each of the employees who would be working in the new school board building.

I didn’t think this was a bad idea and figured that if anything, it would be a way to let these new employees know what was available nearby.  I ended up giving 50 gift certificates for a free DVD rental.  One year later how many of those rental coupons do you think have been used?

0.  That’s right.  None.  So I guess these 50 people and their families either rent elsewhere or don’t watch movies at all.  If they were even given the baskets in the first place.  Other merchants in the area say they haven’t noticed any increase in business either, so who knows.
