Forest Street Past, Present and Future

99 words eaten alive on September 25, 2007 - Filed Under Forest Street, Ranting, This Town -

I’m borrowing these pictures from Rod Hemeon’s Yarmouth Streetscape website to show that Forest Street stands today almost identical to how it looked over 100 years ago. It may not look like this for much longer though, as the plans of certain people begin coming to light.

The way things are going, I don’t think this exaggeration is really that far off the mark. If you would like to follow his story from the beginning, it starts here at Yarmouth Streetscape page 1 and things get crazier every day as the site is now up to page 14.

I do believe the bottom picture is way toooo crazy and don’t think that it will ever happen to that extent. Taking out the trees will lose the historic and nostalgic feel of Forest, but the picture that you have posted from Rod is well too far-fetched.

People make a neighborhood what it is. I don’t want to see the old trees come down, or lose the feel of country in the town sort of thing. Its nice to be able to step back into yesterday if only for afew minutes.

Its time more people got involved to save the trees and Forest Street.

that 2nd pic seems ot be superimposed and the 3rd certainly is exageratted…a bit overcluttered with signage etc..be a bit more realistic.

The first and second pics are real, and the 3rd pic is definitely exaggerated however it wasn’t created by me so it’s not my place to change it.

I’ve lived all my life in Yarmouth as well… pic #2 isn’t Forest Street.. The trees are much taller than that… Amazing what you can do with computers these days…

The first shot is taken in about 1895 from the corner of William and Forest Street. The second shot is taken from the same position in 2006 and I only added the ghost by the tree and I eliminated the stop sign and the crosswalk…… It is amazing but every tree in those shots is still standing after 130 years and have remained almost the same height……The last shot is Forest St. with today’s Prescott Street superimposed on it and I did get carried away with the signage but everything else is our Yarmouth Town Council’s vision of Forest Street’s future.

Nothing is too far fetched if the council wants to do this it will happen …..but I do agree that is will spoil the hertiage of the street.
