I don’t know whether to puke or to smack someone in the head after reading a headline on the front page of our local newspaper, The Vanguard, this morning. (No, I wouldn’t smack the reporter)

badtourism.jpgDid they really need to wait til the end of the summer to figure out that it was a bad year for tourism even though the rest of the province seems to be doing good, tourism wise? As a business owner in the middle of the downtown area, just a couple minutes walk from the Ferry terminal, it’s been painfully obvious since the first week of July that this season sucked hard.

I realize that computers and movie rentals don’t make a typical tourist shop. However, sitting here looking out the front window in the middle of any afternoon during the summer, I can see that what should be a crowded street is virtually empty. And what is the town doing to help improve things? Nothing as far as I can see.

Millions of dollars are being spent to build a new Dept. of Justice building, in South End. Millions were spent putting up a building for the School Board on Water Street. Another 4 million is being planned to build a new building for the Municipality of Yarmouth, outside of town. How about setting aside a measly 10 or 20 thousand to pay someone to keep the damn streets and sidewalks clean down here? Garbage, dog shit, spit, you name it you can find it on the Main Street sidewalk pretty much every day.

One day I heard a shouting match going on outside the store. A couple of people who were walking down this side of the street were shouting obscenities at people sitting in a parked car on the other side. F this, F that, F you, come over here and I’ll rip your F’ing head off. And all this while, the 3 tourists who were in town that day were walking by shaking their heads in disgust. I bet they got a great impression of Yarmouth that day.
