More on the $5m Building

I think the biggest part of this proposed new building that’s pissing people off is the cost of it. $5 million is a lot of money no matter how many ways you slice it. Supporters continue to say that it won’t cause an increase in the already heavy tax burden on the residents of the municipality, but seriously, how can it NOT cause an increase. $5m spread over 30 years (360 months) is nearly $15,000 a month. That’s not even taking into consideration the interest and the future maintenance costs… and power, heating, air conditioning, cleaning, etc.
$15,000 a month. That’s more than my mortgage for an entire year. That’s more than the rent I pay for my store for an entire year. And that’s before taxes, so knock that up to $17,100 a month. Like a customer in the store said to me today, build ‘em a barn for $100 grand and we’ll all be happy. One large open room so they have plenty of free space to roam around and maybe a couple of offices and a bathroom at the back. Simple. I like it.
