Municipality of Yarmouth will build it anyway

News today on both the CJLS website and the Vanguard online indicate that the proposed Municipality of Yarmouth building will be going ahead as planned, to the current tune of 4.89 million dollars. They have requested that the architect work with Delmar Construction (winner of the tender) to keep the cost to 4.5 million before taxes. So by the time they add in taxes, architect fees, service infrastructure (water, power, sewer and so on) I figure we’ll be looking at at least 6 million for a building that very few people want in the first place.
I urge everyone in Yarmouth county who is opposed to this new building to speak out now. It’s your last chance! Send emails to CAO Ken Moses, Warden Bryan Smith, Deputy Warden Brian Noble and Councilors Daniel Muise, Ken Crosby, Staley Goodwin and Leland Anthony to voice your displeasure at this decision, of if you actually support this building I’d like to hear it too. I have yet to hear one good strong valid reason why they should go ahead with this.
I am outraged at the fact that they have decided to go ahead with this new building. It seems that many of the councilors are just selfish arrogant people who are only looking out for themselves. The local residents do NOT want this new building. The Vanguard is constantly full of letters protesting the building and during the CJLS call in shows there were also lots of people speaking out against the construction of a new building. During the last meeting the room was packed and people even had to stand out in the hallway, all to protest this new building. What’s it going to take to wake these people up? 13 people do NOT deserve a 6 million dollar building when there are other alternatives available.
The only people I have seen defending/supporting this new building are the people who are going to be working there, or their family members. Some of the ‘good’ quotes I’ve seen that I felt needed at least some sort of response, even if it’s just me on this little corner of the internet.
Brian Noble – “I want something that the residents would be proud of, that our council would be proud of”
I would wager that 99% of the residents will never even set foot in this new building except to go in and pay their taxes. Even then, many people just mail in a check or pay it online. He doesn’t care about the residents opinion from what I can tell. They don’t need a fancy building to be proud of, they need a person in a booth to take their tax money so they can get on with their day and forget about it for another year.
Brian Noble – “Most of our schools are full of mould, they are unsafe buildings and when you renovate them you get a new looking building with a lot of the same problems.”
So while our children are attending school 10 months of the year in ‘unsafe buildings’, this ex-teacher would still rather waste good money on a new building for 13 people.
Leland Anthony – “The price tag is well worth the bucks that this municipality will have to spend to build it”
Worth it to who? The people who will be working there, and that’s it.
Unknown – “People are elected to make these hard decisions”
Seems like this was an easy decision for most of the elected officials. They look at this nice lavish new building, hear the complaints of the tax payers; the people who elected them, and then go ahead and do what they want anyway.
CJLS News – “Deputy Warden Brian Noble says he never got the sense that there was widespread opposition to a new building”
Is he perhaps blind and deaf? He can’t see all the people opposing this new structure?
Let’s not forget that the Yarmouth Volunteer Fire Department is in desperate need of renovation, which is being put off for another year due to funding issues. Isn’t THAT more important than a cushy new seat for the Municipal council? I realize that municipal money is different from town money and so on, but ask any resident where they’d rather see their tax dollars and I bet the majority would like to see it spent where it’s needed, not where a few people want it.
Well councilors, enjoy it while you can, because when election time comes around again I bet at least a few of you will be out on your asses.
