Popped Caps

I haven’t seen a motherboard with popped capacitors in a while, but a computer came in today that just wasn’t turning on anymore.  I tested the power supply first and that was fine, which typically means bad motherboard or very rarely, bad CPU.  I checked the capacitors on the motherboard and sure enough, most of them were popped up and some had been leaking.

This was a very common problem about 5 or 6 years ago, a huge batch of bad capacitors had been purchased by most motherboard manufacturers and within a year they started popping and/or leaking.  This would result in dead boards which would have to be replaced.  The problem now, since these boards are a good 5 years old, is that they can’t just replace the board.  The CPU and RAM also need to be replaced, so in most cases such as today’s, the owners opt to simply buy a new tower instead of spending a couple hundred bucks to replace a few parts.
