Draft Stopper

One of the biggest problems we have with this house in the winter is that all the interior doors have a large gap at the bottom of almost an inch. So even if we try to keep the heat down in most of the house, whichever room we are currently in always has a cold draft coming in under the door.

Last year we just took some old sweaters and stuck them in the doorway, but that wasn’t really the best solution. It works, yes, but then you tend to trip over it all the time and that’s no fun. This year I had an idea that was half born from a suggestion someone gave me. I went to the dollar store and bought a hand towel, one that was as long as the bottom edge of the door. I cut the towel into strips about 4 inches wide, folded it in half and nailed it to the bottom of the door. This way the draft is cut off without us needing to trip over stuff. The towel is light and soft enough that it just slides over the carpet without jamming up the door. Best of all, I was able to do all 4 doors for less than $2 worth of materials.

For reference, and this would work better if you have wood or similar smooth floors, the original suggestion was to take the door of it’s hinges, roll up a towel and nail it to the bottom edge of the door before putting the door back up. This would have the same draft stopping effect, but would take a little more work get the thickness just right and would probably not work as well on carpet.
