Wireless Landlords

Last week a customer/friend was in the store to say he had just bought a house quite a ways out of town, where only dialup is available. As it turns out however, there’s a privately owned tower out there that’s pumping out a wireless internet signal to the surrounding area. All he needs to do is put a dish up on his house, aim it at the tower and he’s good to go. The monthly cost is about the same as the other high speed providers in the area, so the only real difference will the cost of getting the dish mounted and probably a small initial setup fee.

Up until then I hadn’t even thought of someone putting up their own tower for that sort of purpose. After doing a bit of research on it though, it’s a rather common thing. There’s even a Wireless Landlord Association in the United States for cellular tower owners. The association helps private landlords to work out lease deals with the major cellular companies such as Sprint and AT&T in order to expand their wireless coverage to remote areas. The WLA also provides free promotion and marketing for it’s members to help them succeed. Something like this could make a good addition for the internet guy outside of town here, as far as I know the cell phone coverage in that area is pretty dismal.
