Council Helps Those Not in Need

At a recent finance committee meeting, the owners of the local Canadian Tire asked for $7500 to help build a waterproof shelter for the farmers market that takes place in their parking lot. The market ran for 14 weeks last year and is planned to run 20 weeks next summer. That’s a lot of money for something that runs such a short period. Well, ‘a lot’ is rather subjective though. To me it’s a lot of money, that’s 8 months rent. To a big company like Can. Tire it’s a drop of water in a lake.
Must be nice to be able to walk into a meeting and talk your way into a large donation. Even though council says the request was unorganized and didn’t quite fit with the towns regulations. Even though $7500 amounts to 10% of the total that council hands out to organizations in need yearly. Even though nothing is being done to help the downtown, they can pump more money into Starrs Road; an area that already gets lots of traffic without even trying.
Sure, it’s nice to see something like this succeed, but by all accounts the farmers market last summer was already a success. The Canadian Tire owners can argue all they want that they’re just giving back to the community by footing the bill for insurance and things, but at the end of the day this event still brings in more customers who will likely spend money in their store.
In the end the committee decided that they will support up to one third of the cost of the new structure, and the council backed this decision.
