Beach Cruiser Bikes

I was later than most when it came to learning to ride a bike. I think I was probably 8 or 9 years old when we first got one, an ugly orange one that could fold in half for easy storage that had fenders over the tires. Me and my brother would take turns, sitting on the fender (the seat was a little too high for us) and coasting down the small hill in the lawn to see how far we could get before falling over. An hour or so of that and we finally got our balance right and could actually ride the thing. Shortly after that we got slightly more normal bikes, kind of, mine was one of those lowriders with the banana seat, and my brothers was.. I don’t even remember, but I remember he cut the front forks off of 2 other bikes and strapped them to his to make a crazy long chopper out of it that wobbled a lot and was hard to steer.

Those were the days alright. For passing in grade 4 I got a shiny new BMX that lasted me several years until I got my first 10 speed that was way too big for me but was so much faster. Living out in the country, about 20km from town, meant I did a lot of biking growing up. Back and forth to friends houses or to the corner store that was about 4km away. One summer I had one of those little odometers to see just how far I was going. I pedaled over 2000 km that summer, would have never guessed I rode THAT much. Now I’m too lazy/busy and haven’t ridden my bike in a couple years even though I got a new one not too long ago, free from air miles.
