Gothic III – Buggy-ass Game

Last week we had a customer in who was in need of a computer upgrade. He had just picked up Gothic III and it wouldn’t run on his current rig (GeForce 4 is just a little old these days). First we tried a 2nd hand GeForce 7600GS AGP card and some more RAM, the game worked but it was pretty glitchy when running around outside of town. From time to time it would pause for about 3 seconds, probably while loading up more content.
We eventually bumped him up to a new AM2 motherboard with an AMD X2 4400+, 1gb of RAM and a GeForce 8600GT. The game runs much better now although it still glitches a little, rarely for more than a fraction of a second though. Even after updating to the current version (1.6) and adding another gig of RAM it still does it. Unfortunately it seems like that’s the best we’re going to get out of it. I tried the game on my own system at home which also has an X2 4400+, 2 gigs of RAM and a Radeon X1950PRO video card. It runs about the same, the little hang ups are still there.
It’s a shame too because the game is actually quite fun. My biggest gripe with it however is that since I’ve been playing MMORPG’s like EverQuest and WoW for the last several years, I find it annoying that I have to remember to save my progress constantly. A cheap death after an hour of exploring can be quite frustrating since the only option is to reload from your last save point. Even the quick save button makes you sit and wait for about 15 seconds while it records your progress, and if you die you have to wait about a minute for it to reload. Hopefully they’ll find a way to address this bugginess, it would definitely make the game more appealing.
