Speaking of Old Junk

People often used to wonder where we’d get so many used items since surely there weren’t dozens of people coming in to sell second hand coffee pots. This was back before we were Gator Byte, when Lakeview Clearance Center first started up. We mainly dealt with a company based in Niagara Falls named VDC, they were basically commodity brokers who would buy up pallet.jpgoverstock items and store returns from major retail chains. Zellers, Futureshop and Sears were the common ones and at the time we could buy a 4′ high pallet of goods for between $250 to $400. Electronics were more expensive though, typically costing $800 or more.

It was like Christmas whenever a shipment of pallets would come in. You never knew what would be hiding down in those boxes. One electronics pallet was great, it was full of car speakers, Kenwood amplifiers and other small electronics, nearly all of them in good working order. I figure we probably tripled our money on that one by the time it all sold. The next couple pallets were horrible though, containing 2 TVs and some other assorted crap. By the time we paid to repair the TVs we ended up losing money on that load, even considering one of them was a Wega that sold for $1000. Doing that sort of business was definitely fun, but was proving to be too risky.
