Web Directory Listing Benefits

I’ve been wondering a bit lately if it’s worth the effort to get listed in web directories. After all, everywhere you look a new one is springing up, and a web directory could be as simple as one person publishing his list of bookmarks or as elaborate as a database of thousands of links all searchable by category or location and so on. Mostly I think a listing in a free web directory is beneficial for any website, especially one that engages in e-commerce. It gives them more ways for their potential clients to find them.

A downside to these listings is that in some cases, search engines such as Google may determine that the directory is a ‘bad neighborhood’ and may ultimately de-list the website from its search engine. This could have devastating effects on the traffic a website receives. A ‘bad neighborhood’ is typically a network of link farms created solely for the purpose of making the websites they link to seem more important in an attempt to boost the page rank of those websites. Higher page rank leads to more traffic which can lead to increased revenue either from direct sales or ad clicks, for example.

So while I think getting your name out there as much as possible is a good thing, it’s important to check out the places you plan to get listed in to make sure they’re on the up and up.
