Asthma

149 words eaten alive on July 28, 2008 - Filed Under Health, Life -

I’ve had asthma pretty much since I was born and unlike most people I know, I never grew out of it during my teen years. In my case it’s here to stay and it really sucks. I got switched off Ventolin though, they say that can be hard on the airways with extended use. The downside is that the new stuff I’m on runs me around $110 every couple months. I guess on the bright side at least acne was never a problem for me aside from the occasional pimple here and there.

I hear there’s a new government sponsored drug plan for Nova Scotians that everyone is eligible for. Deductibles are determined by income, and once you spend a certain amount on prescriptions the gov’t chips in 80% after that. Worth looking in to since we’re not on Blue Cross or any group plans.

Having asthma since childhood myself, I can relate to your feelings about it.

Later on in life (1993)I was further diagnosed with a genetic disposition called Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (Alpha-1)for short. It has been and still is being underdiagonsed in people with lung problems, especially of Norwegian decent. “Other common diagnoses include COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), asthma, chronic bronchitis, and bronchiectasis.” You might want to check out the web site http://alpha1.org for more information.
