Games like Second Life and Project Entropia are fairly popular, not quite on the scale of World of Warcraft, but they do have a strong following. They are both free to play, but if you want to do much in either game you need to convert some real cash into virtual cash. You need fake money to buy things and when you’re starting out the easiest way to get fake money is with real money. So instead of paying a monthly fee like with other MMO’s, you get to pay a little bit once in a while, as much or as little as you like.
There is a way to get some fake money for free though, using metaRL.com. You earn meta points by doing various things such as filling out surveys, taking trial offers and playing their games. The meta points can then be converted into free Habbo credits, PE Peds, or SL Lindens. You can take this a step further though and turn the meta points into Lindens, and then turn the Lindens into real cash!
I’d take the PE Peds myself, I used to play it a while back when I was on a break from EverQuest and it was pretty fun although a bit glitchy. I hear they’ve made lots of improvements in the last couple of years though so it may be fun to re-visit Entropia and blow up some monsters with my free ammunition.
