Lobster Fishermen on Strike – Selling Own Product

225 words eaten alive on December 2, 2008 - Filed Under News, This Country, This Town -

Yesterday I heard the news that the lobster fishermen are on strike because the price is so low. They’re trying to block shipments out of the area in an effort to get better rates. On the one hand I don’t feel sorry for them. Every year they complain, even when they were getting $6 or more a pound they still complained. All I can say to that is “wahhhhh I can’t afford my half million dollar house payment, 2 trucks, 2 ATVs and so on wahhhhhh”. I’ve never had much sympathy for whiny fishermen, hell they make more during the off season while collecting Employment Insurance than I do in a whole year of working my ass off.

But, this year is bad and I can understand that $3 a pound isn’t worth it for them. They have to pay expenses, pay the crew, pay for fuel and so on. On top of that, it’s not an easy job, injury and death lurk around the corner every day they’re out on the water all for a measly $3 a pound. The last time I checked at Sobeys they were still selling for $10 a pound, so why are the fishermen getting paid so little? Sounds like the buyers and retailers are getting a bigger markup than usual.
