Be an Olympic Torchbearer

Perhaps one of the biggest surprises of my day today was learning that Coca Cola is pumping 5 million bucks into it’s SOGO Active program in collaboration with ParticipACTION. The program is targeted at youths and teens in an effort to help them become more active.

As an added incentive to get more people interested in an active lifestyle, Coke is giving you a chance to be an Olympic torchbearer for the 2010 Vancouver games. Over 1000 young people from all over Canada will be chosen to carry the torch, with 20 of those being from the Halifax area. With Halifax being our closest city I think that people from Yarmouth should be included as well.

Sogo isn’t just your average “get active” promotion. There’s a great website that people can sign up with, and from there they can join groups of other people with similar goals. You can set your own goals too, instead of following a rigid, pre-designed plan. So if you don’t like doing certain exercises for example, no problem, do the things you enjoy instead; as long as you’re being active it’s all good.

People over 20 who are interested in this initiative don’t have to feel left out. Even those they can’t participate in Sogo directly, they can still provide support to youths in the program by signing up to be a Sogo host. A host provides access to a variety of facilities such as training areas, swimming pools, gymnasiums, hiking trails and so on.

So what are you waiting for? Get sogo-ing!
