Somebody Hates Us!

553 words eaten alive on March 3, 2009 - Filed Under Amused, Business -

All I can say is wow, these are quite the interesting comments I’ve been getting on this blog lately from an individual too chicken to leave his real name & contact info. Known to us simply as jon@hotmail.com he loves to slam our business and extol the virtues of our new competitor, GameStop. At first I was going to simply ignore him and delete the comments, but I realized that it gives me a good way to make some comparisons between us and GameStop.

This comment was left on the “Need Stamps” post:
You need stamps? you will need food stamps when gamestops run your shifty little business out of town…. i h8 you you are such a rip off 59.99 for a used game that i can buy new at wal mart for 39.99 where the hell you get off…

Ok, first off I have never sold a used game for $59.99 in the 9 years I’ve been open for business. GameStop sells a LOT of games for $54.99 to $59.99 USED! The most I sell used games for is $39.99 (very rare exception is $44.99 for special editions). As for selling higher than Walmart, it’s possible that it happens from time to time. It’s not like I can drive to walmart every day to compare every single price on every game to make sure I’m cheaper on the used items. I generally try to keep my used prices around 25% to 33% cheaper than new prices. So if a new game is selling for $60, I sell for $40. If it’s $40, I sell for $25 to $30.

Another point of comparison between us and them are the trade in values (and keep in mind that GS ONLY offers trade-in credit, I offer both cash and trade-in). Since they sell their “top” used games for such high prices, they can offer more on the trade ins. Lets use Saints Row 2 as an example. They will give you $37 in credit for it and sell it for $54.99. That’s a difference of $18 you’d have to pay if trading in a newer game and then buying a similar value used game. Here at Gator Byte I’d pay $20 cash for Saints Row 2 or offer $25 in store credit. I’d turn around and sell it for $39.98, a difference of only $15 if you were trading in towards a similar value used game.

When it comes to older games my offers are even better. A guy came in the other day with a few game cube games to trade in, I offered him $20 credit. GS had only offered him around $5. As for me selling older stuff, even if some of my prices are a bit higher my nearly permanent “Buy 2 get a 3rd free” sale more than makes up for it.

So in short, Jon, I’m sure that GS isn’t going to run me out of business, or make me need food stamps (do we even have food stamps in this country??), or make me go bankrupt so the bank takes everything. I survived a few years back when Walmart, Staples and Movie Gallery all opened at about the same time, I will survive this.

WHAT GIVES YOU THE RIGHT TO SAY THAT TO THE OWNER OF GATORBYTE? YOU OBVIOUSLY HAVEN’T SHOPPED THERE BEFORE OR AT LEAST VISITED THE STORE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO ‘KNOW’ THE PRICE OF THE GAMES. I HAVE ONLY EVER SEEN GAMES THERE FOR AT MOST $45, SO I DON’T SEE WHERE YOU GET OFF SAYING THAT HE CHARGES $60.

YOU OBVIOUSLY HAVE NEVER OWNED A BUSINESS TO KNOW THAT YOU CAN’T PRICE CHECK EVERYTHING, LIKE THE OWNER HAS MADE CLEAR IN HIS ARTICLE.

YOU DEFINATELY WOULDN’T WANT TO SAY THAT TO HIS SPOUSE, SHE WOULDN’T TAKE THAT BULL$#!+ FROM ANYONE. I’M SURE CHRIS WOULDN’T TAKE THAT FROM ANYONE EITHER. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THAT YOU HAVE YOUR IDENTITY SAVED BY THE ‘GREAT OLD’ INTERNET. YOU WOULD NEVER HAVE THE GUTS TO SAY THAT TO THEIR FACES.

TAKE A HIKE AND LEAVE THE OWNER ALONE, HE IS A GREAT MAN WITH QUALITY USED PRODUCTS. THAT’S WHAT COUNTS IN THE END.
GAME STOP WILL PROBABLY OPEN MORE STORES AND I WILL STILL GO TO GATORBYTE BECAUSE, I KNOW I WILL BE HELPING A GREAT (AND I MEAN GREAT!) FAMILY OUT AND I WILL BE SUPPORTING A IN-TOWN BUSINESS.

YOU NEED TO GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT!
CHING CHANG CHONG WOMAN, I AGREE WITH YOU, PTUIIII!!!!
