What to do with the back yard

Seems like no matter what we do back there it just still looks like crap. Had it excavated to flatten the yard out, raked it and planted seed. Watered it. Didn’t grow. Seeded again, still nothing, just some weeds, alders and thorny wild rose bushes. So we gave up, something will grow eventually. So we built a small deck on the back of the house, put up a swing set and slide for the kid and just bought a trampoline. Slowly we’re covering up all the non-grass back there so soon it won’t matter that it isn’t very green.
Been looking at other things like a basketball hoop for the kid and something for roasting marshmallows like a BBQ pit or outdoor fireplaces. Haven’t quite decided what to do there and have to find out what we’re allowed to do in the first place. I think we’re still within town limits so there’s probably some town by-laws concerning fires that we need to double check on.
